Description

At the southern tip of Africa, along the brooding, craggy coastline of the southern Cape, two mighty but opposing oceans meet – the one cold, the other, warm. The impact is immense. It affects the climate, the coastline and areas inland, and the influence on the vineyards of the Western Cape is significant.

The Atlantic Ocean that flows along the west coast of Africa is fed by the icy Benguela current from the South Pole. The Indian Ocean is fed by the Agulhas current coming from the tropics. Their connection, amidst crashing waves and soaring spray, creates a unique set of conditions.

Whether along the coast or further inland, the presence of the oceans is never far away. Cooling sea breezes and mists can lower temperatures during the lead-up to the harvest, slowing down ripening. Grapes aren’t hurried but develop in their own time with flavours that are balanced, intense and plentiful.

Grapes aren't hurried but develop in their own time with flavours that are balanced, intense and plentiful.Clay Creek Vineyards is a winery that has been cultivating grapes since 1924 and is proudly owned by a family. The family firmly believes in sustainable farming practices and takes their responsibility of caring for the earth seriously by utilizing environmentally sensitive farming techniques. Their wines are crafted using grapes sourced from exceptional vineyards in California and are bottled at their own sustainable winery, which is a testament to their commitment to quality and sustainability. This wine is meticulously crafted from carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from premium vineyards in Lodi. It is then skillfully bottled at Clay Creek's sustainable winery, where the family's dedication to sustainability and their passion for winemaking converge to create a truly exceptional product. The Gnarly Head Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, rich, red wine grown from some of the oldest vines in California. The grapes for this Cabernet Sauvignon are harvested off "head trained" vines that resemble wild bushes with twisted old trunks and branches that spread out in all directions like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. These untamed vines produce full-flavoured grapes, with dense aromas of black cherry and juicy blackberry.Gnarly Head Merlot breaks the Merlot mold, and tells a story of power and finesse. Anything but classic, this wine shows off bold aromas of black currant, blackberry and notes of toasted oak, followed by juicy flavors of black cherry, ripe plum and sweet herbs with a hint of spice rounding out the finish. Supple, velvety tannins and lush fruit make this wine an ideal match for beef sliders, Tandoori chicken or even chocolate mousse. The colour and tannins of the wine are delicately extracted by employing traditional vinification methods and long maceration (20 days). The resulting wine combines power and refinement. It exhibits a deep purple-crimson robe, a nose of violets and ripe red fruits with hints of vanilla oak. A structured wine with an ample, round finish enhanced by liquorice tannins. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a delicate, understated wine with pretty floral aromatics and mid-weight structure. Drink this soft, easygoing Cabernet over the next few years.
